The Tastiest Vegan Mozzarella & Basil Pizza EVER!

Discover our take on a classic Italian dish with our vegan mozzarella pizza recipe topped with beautifully fragrant fresh basil.

Not only will we be showing you how to make vegan mozzarella cheese, but we’ll also be sharing with you our own 4 ingredient pizza dough recipe AND our delicious tomato and garlic pizza sauce.

Warning – you might drool during this tutorial.

Traditionally, Italian pizza is topped with mozzarella cheese, but our vegan take on this is made from just a few simple ingredients including potato starch, garlic powder and a hint of nutritional yeast (for that added cheesiness!)

This recipe creates 2 large pizzas, so we hope you’re hungry (otherwise, half the recipe for one large, delicious pizza!).

Vegan Pizza Margherita Recipe

Pizza Dough

  • 500 grams strong bread flour
  • 340 ml water (room temperature)
  • 1 tbsp fast action dried yeast
  • 1 tsp salt

Pizza Sauce

  • 1 can chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary
  • salt & pepper (to taste)

Mozzarella "Cheese"

  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup cashew nuts (soaked in boiling water for at least 10 minutes)
  • 1/4 cup potato starch (can also use tapioca starch if to hand)
  • 1 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1/2 lemon (juice of)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt


For the Pizza Dough

  1. Measure the flour into a large bowl, mix in the yeast and salt

  2. Make a well in the centre, pour the water in and mix well to form a dough

  3. Once combined, bring out and knead on a well floured surface for 15 minutes - get your timers on!

  4. Shape into a ball and rub lightly with oil. Cover the bowl and leave to rise for an hour (or until its doubled in size)

  5. Now take the dough from the bowl and knead again for around a minute, then divide it into 2 dough balls.

  6. Wrap them both in cling film and leave to prove for another 30 minutes (in the meantime, make your vegan mozzarella and pizza sauce).

  7. Lastly, shape your dough balls into a base, whichever way you like, we went for the classic pizza shape.

Pizza Sauce

  1. Add all ingredients to a blender and blitz until well combined. Taste for seasoning and adjust to your liking.

Mozzarella Cheese

  1. Add all ingredients to a blender and blitz until well combined

  2. Place mixture in a small saucepan on a medium-high heat.

  3. Stir constantly (or you'll burn the pan!) until the mixture is really thick (for about 15 minutes). Set aside ready to assemble your pizzas!

Recipe Notes

  • Assemble pizza with sauce (leaving about 2cm of space either side for crust) and dollop your cheese mixture in circles, or as you please!
  • Bake your pizza at 475 degrees F | 245 degrees C | Gas Mark 9 for 15-20 minutes.
