Ethiopian Buticha (Spicy Chickpea Dip)

This popular spicy chickpea dip from Ethiopia in West Africa (which is ready in only 7 minutes!) is the perfect accompaniment to Injera; an Ethiopian style pancake which is rolled up and cut into small pieces, ready for dunking. Delicious!

Ethiopian Buticha

Buticha is a beautiful spicy chickpea dip that is packed with flavour and sumptuous spices. You can dip just about anything into this and we guarantee it will be delicious!

  • 1 cup chickpeas cooked
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup red onion finely chopped
  • 1/2 juice lemon
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 1 tsp chilli flakes
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper


  1. Put all ingredients into a blender and blitz until a smooth consistency is achieved.

  2. Chill in the fridge for about an hour before serving. Garnish with a lemon wedge to be all fancy.
